Congratulations Meena Moorthy, the 2021 Clara Javan Goodbody Award recipient.
This award is in memory of Clara Javan Goodbody, the mother of Louise Ann Goodbody, who served as the Dean of Women from 1906 to 1911. This $2,500 award is given to a graduating senior woman for use in pursuing graduate study.
Meena is earning a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a minor in Healthcare Management and Policy from the College of Arts and Sciences. Meena was involved in various student organizations. Her campus involvement included TEDxIndianaUniversity, the IU Journal of Undergraduate Research and Timmy Global Health. Academically, she was a research intern at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute’s Glaucoma Research and Diagnostic Center and co-authored a research article published entitled “Circadian Rhythm and Glaucoma: What Do We Know?,” in Journal of Glaucoma. Meena also spent a lot of time volunteering while at Indiana University.
With the student organization Timmy Global Health, Meena visited Guatemala to work in clinics as a Spanish translator. In the Bloomington community, she tutors Latinx children in reading, writing and math with La Escuelita, and volunteers with IU Health’s Get Onboard Active Living (GOAL) program, designed to engage with elementary school children and educate on the importance of nutrition and physical activity. She also volunteered with Hoosier Action, where she worked on a housing campaign during the pandemic to extend the moratorium on evictions. She will be attending medical school at the Indiana University School of Medicine to pursue her medical doctorate degree.
Meena Moorthy was humbled and honored to receive this award. She said:
I would like to thank the Awards Committee for selecting me for the Clara Javan Goodbody Award. I feel both humbled and honored … I would also like to thank Dr. Israel Herrera for my nomination and Dr. Christoph Irmscher and Dr. Kristi DeBoeuf for all of their help in recommending me for this award. Finally, I would like to thank my family for always supporting me in all of my academic and extracurricular endeavors.“
