Congratulations to Andre Small, one of the 2020 Stahr Award recipients. Andre is completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the College of Arts and Sciences. Andre’s greatest accomplishment has been working hard to achieve his goals while staying true to himself. His passion for academics and medicine can be seen through his work both on and off-campus.
As a Herman B Wells scholar, Andre’s academic achievements led to him being selected in exceptional internship opportunities in the medical field. He held a summer internship as a Research Assistant in the John Hopkins University School of Medicine where he focused his research on investigating the role of Sodium-Hydrogen Exchanger in regulating smooth muscle cell apoptosis in pulmonary hypertension with Dr. Larissa Shimoda. Andre was also a Summer Research Scholar at the University of Louisville, School of Medicine where he participated in a six-week intensive program focused on biomedical sciences. Andre will attend Harvard Medical School in the fall.
Campus and Community Involvement
On campus, he is a part of Phi Beta Kappa, a prestigious honor society to promote excellence in the liberal arts & sciences, and Alpha Chi Sigma, a professional fraternity specializing in the fields of the chemical sciences. He also served as a Resident Assistant in the Ashton Residence Hall Health Sciences community where he helped create an intentional and welcoming learning environment for over 30 pre-health students. Andre also has a passion for helping elementary school students improve their reading levels, he founded the Read to Succeed Volunteer Program. This program facilitates reading sessions two hours per week at the Boys and Girls Club in Bloomington.
Andre believes his advisors and professors really made an impact on his time here at IU. When asked to write an acknowledgement to those who helped him here at IU, he said, “Thank you to my advisors and professors that have guided me throughout my undergraduate career. Your support and belief in my abilities fuel me every day to make a positive impact.”
