IU Outdoor Adventures is thrilled to announce their offering for IU’s Bicentennial celebration – three trips to Europe! These IUOA Grand Expeditions will take students to France, Switzerland, and Austria and provide students with the opportunity to experience these countries through a unique and active lens.
Based on the “summer tramps” of the 1880s and 1890s, IUOA is bringing back the spirit of educational tourism with these grand expeditions. They recognize IU’s continued and pioneering leadership in overseas study and provide students, alumni, and friends the opportunity to explore and learn in a way that goes beyond the classroom setting. Find out more about how these trips relate to the Bicentennial celebrations and more on the inspiration behind these three trips here.
The trip to France (June 11-17) will take participants to the mountain village of Chamonix, where they will explore the Alps, ride in one of the tallest gondolas in the world while touring Aiguille du Midi, and mountaineer in Mont Blanc Massif. Of course, no trip to France is complete without tasting the culinary classics of French culture! Fondu, escargot, croissants, fromage, baguettes, crepes, and many more treats await in Chamonix. There will be a day set up for a choose your own adventure, in which participants can opt into various activities, including paragliding over the Alps, rock climbing via ferrata, whitewater rafting, hiking, or further exploration of Chamonix. Register here for this exciting and wonderful adventure!
The Swiss Adventure will tour the adventure capital of Europe in the valley of 72 Waterfalls! With Interlaken as a home base, participants will go whitewater rafting and take the world’s oldest cogwheel train to the “Rooftop of Europe” where they will climb on glaciers under the peaks of the Swiss Alps! While in Switzerland, participants will have the chance to kayak or paddle board in Lake Birenz, go on a hike or boat tour, and sample the finest Switzerland food: roschti, fondue, gelato, and chocolate! Join us June 24th-30th on this waterland adventure! Register here!
Austria is the last of the three expeditions, allowing participants to explore the hills famously alive with the sound of music – Innsbruck! With a hike through the Alderweg trail, one of the most breathtaking trails in Europe, there will be ample opportunity to see lots of hills! While on this hike participants will stay in luxurious alpine huts, which are more like catered chalets with delicious food. Register here for the final expedition, July 4th-12th!
IU Outdoor Adventures is partnering with Alpenglow Education to both design and guide these once in a lifetime opportunities. Alpenglow employs many alumni of both IU and IU Outdoor Adventures including guides Curt Davidson and Ellen Henderson. Having served many years as trip leaders and instructors for IUOA, Curt and Ellen could not be more excited to return to the IU faithful and share these experiences. Here are some words from Curt himself:
“Offering these courses for IU and the Grand Expedition efforts is a real opportunity to give back. I earned all three degrees, undergraduate, masters, and doctorate from IU so it is truly a special place for me. This also meant I was involved with IUOA for many many years and it provided me with so many wonderful opportunities. But, beyond that, it was a community and a home for me while I was in Bloomington. The same people I led trips with, slept under the stars with, suffered in the rain and the mud on courses with, were the same people I went to restaurants and festivals with. And, most importantly, they were the people I went to when I was having a hard time, or needed to celebrate an accomplishment. IUOA was a place to learn and grow as an outdoor leader and also a place to learn how to be a community member and contribute to a team. We’ve seen how IUOA trips can build lifelong bonds and friendships among people who are brave enough to step out of their comfort zones, and we couldn’t wait to try to offer a new experience for alumni or current students to connect with fellow Hoosiers.”
