Master of Social Work student, Hailey Brown, received her undergraduate degree in psychology but ultimately decided to pursue a career in social work after talking with a friend who was a social work major. Hailey fell in love with the idea of social work after hearing her friend talk about all that social work does and all the career paths that were available. After entering the Master of Social Work program at IUPUI and taking her first few classes, Hailey knew she chose the right career path.
Currently, Hailey is an intern at Kenosis Counseling Center in Greenwood, IN. As an intern, Hailey sees clients at an individual level, and she even put on an Out of the Darkness walk through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention on April 11, 2021. After graduation, Hailey would like to obtain a License in Social Work and also become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Hailey’s ultimate goal is to have her own private practice since mental health counseling is something that Hailey has dreamed about doing since she was in high school.
Hailey is most passionate about learning how to best help others through their struggle with addiction. Hailey personally knows people who have struggled with addiction, and she knows how hard it can be on the addict and their family.
Hailey’s advice for those pursuing a career in social work is to make sure you take care of yourself. Hailey believes that burnout does happen, so it is important to be prepared and start self-care before you feel overwhelmed and burnt out. Hailey’s favorite quote is: I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody. -Lily Tomlin
