Introducing me!
Hi there, and welcome to the new School of Health and Human Sciences (SHHS) blog. My name is Maddie, I am the new health and wellness specialist. Our school is the only school within the entire university (IU Indianapolis) that has someone in this position. We are very excited to further the health and wellness of our students, faculty and staff. The goal of my position is to increase the understanding, and usage of health and wellness resources available to those within our school, as well as increase overall retention rates.
Let me explain my background a little bit, and share my experience in this field with you. I graduated from SHHS in 2021 with my Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree. I majored in Fitness Management and Personal Training, minored in Health Education and Wellness Coaching and received a Personal Training certificate as well as a Nutrition certificate. I graduated from SHHS in 2023 with my Master of Science in Kinesiology degree. During undergrad and grad school I spent time doing research in active video games, and how we can manipulate them to produce physiological responses similar to traditional exercise. I worked at various gyms throughout my schooling, whether I was a member services representative, a group fitness instructor, or a personal trainer. I have volunteered for Live Laugh Dance, a Down Syndrome dance camp for adults for many years, creating a fun and inclusive spot for these dancers to make friends and get their exercise in!
My passions and interest include chronic disease prevention, health equity, and health education. My goal is to ensure SHHS is an inclusive space where physical activity, exercise, and healthy habits are not only encouraged, but they are the easy option. Please stay tuned to read more about the wellness resources, programming, and more within our school.
