Alex Hupp, a junior majoring in Music Education, has won the 2024 IU Southeast Music History Research Award for his paper entitled, “8-Bit Beats and Joystick Jams: A History of Video Game Music.” The committee of judges was particularly impressed by Hupp’s creation of a survey designed to investigate participants’ knowledge of video game music. Hupp then incorporated this data into his paper and analyzed its implications. Dr. Ann Glazer Niren created this award many years ago to recognize excellence in research and writing in music history courses. A longstanding faculty member in music, Dr. Niren is leaving IUS at the conclusion of this semester.
