Analyzing Results from Sociological Survey
As we conducted our survey regarding the public’s opinion regarding how the current COVID-19 pandemic is being handled and opinions on what we can do better, along with how it is personally affecting those around us. As we saw in our literary review, there are many factors that can still be improved in order to help curb this pandemic, and our results show that many feel this way as well.
As shown here, over 80% of our class feels that the government is not doing enough in order to help curb the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, since the taking of this survey, the United States has seen a massive spike in cases following the election season and also the Thanksgiving holiday. Many also agree that more should be done to help low income areas get masks since that would be another way to effectively slow the spread.
As related to the above question, no one in our class felt that the government should not be helping those who have been financially impacted by the pandemic and ensuing shutdown of many sectors of work.
This question shows that very few feel like the United States is doing well comparatively to other countries. This can be related to several factors but has been shown throughout the questioning in this survey with matters such as helping low income areas stop the spread or help those who have been financially impacted, especially when there are other countries around the world who are making the strides that would be able to help those we know here in our own country.
In fact, not one person in our class felt as though Americans as a whole were taking the pandemic seriously. As we’ve written about before, many are flaunting the mask mandates, or marking them as against their individual liberties, and so many feel that the pandemic is not being taken as seriously as it should be, and 50% of our class feels uncertain that the pandemic will be over anytime soon. We are nearly nine months into the lockdown now, and it is easy to see that many are starting to question when a sense of normalcy will return.
Over half our class felt as though if the mask mandate were to be lifted, they would continue to wear their masks in public spaces to help with the spread of the virus even though they were no longer mandated to do so. Nearly 90% felt as though the politicization of this pandemic has divided our country even further, while a very small minority felt as though this pandemic has not affected our country at all and we are as united as we ever were.
Everyone has had their social lives affected to some degree by this pandemic, but some don’t feel that it was very negatively impacted, since their are still ways to socially interact via technology and even going out now that many places are beginning to reopen. However, as reported by our class, very many have felt their mental health has been very negatively impacted by this pandemic. No one felt that it had been not severely impacted, and the lowest vote on our scale was a 4, with the average score being over an 8. This helps us see just how many people are being affected not just by the disease, but from the effects that come from attempting to curb it, and the prolonged staying in that is being exacerbated by those who are not taking the pandemic as seriously as many feel they need to,

I felt that your survey presented good date! One thing that I would have to mention is I wish that the layout of your post was done a little differently. It was rather difficult to figure out which question you were discussing just from the pictures. Overall, amazing work!

Thank you for the feedback!

I noticed that 80% of people said that the government isn’t doing enough to curve the pandemic, but what do you think the governments role should be on this? Is it even the governments problem? Also, I thought it was neat how you added in the charts with the questions and answers. I really enjoyed learning more about what people think from your survey.

Thanks for the response! I personally think that the government should be doing more to control the pandemic because we have evidence from other countries whose governments implemented strict lockdowns and those countries are now at 0 cases while the US is at an all time high for cases.

Great post! It’s interesting that so many people think the government did not handle the pandemic well. Do you think the politicization of masks was a big factor in the United States seeming to struggle more with the pandemic compared to other countries? It seemed the United States had a tougher time enforcing the masks.
Riley Roberts
I do think that the politicization of masks has had a lot to do with masks being such an issue for some people. It’s really frustrating to see people not wearing masks because they think it’s a political agenda rather than just to keep our citizens safe.

These are really interesting results. I wonder what everyone would like to see from the government? What could the government do to be seen as taking the pandemic seriously?

I know there are a lot of countries that were much stricter on their lockdown than the US was and those countries now have 0 cases. I understand that no one wants to be in lockdown but I think, had it been much stricter the first time to just bite the bullet and get it over with, our cases wouldn’t be at an all time high like they are now.

I think that this post shows your data very well and helps the reader fuller understand how the class really feels about how the pandemic has effected their lives.

I think you had good questions on your survey and it was interesting to see how people feel about the limited social interaction. I personally felt like more alone and upset when quarantine first started, and it was good to see that people feel the same. What do you think can help people who struggle mentally during this time?

This is a great post! I found it interesting to see that over 60% of the participants in your survey didn’t think that the government is doing enough to help with the pandemic. I definitely thought the number would be much lower. On the other hand, I was not surprised to see that most of your participants don’t think that the United States is handling the pandemic well in comparison to other countries. I expected to see that. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised to see the answers from your survey as I felt like most of your participants feel like we, as Americans, need to take the pandemic more seriously. I really liked the questions that you asked and I feel like they covered a good variety of topics. Well done!

I agree with you and we weren’t at all surprised to see that people feel the pandemic is not being taken seriously here in the US. Thank you for your feedback!

On your survey you guys had some good questions! It was fascinating to see what other people felt about having social interaction limited. I think the questions that were asked were good and they talked about most of the topics. Great post!

Thanks for your feedback! We’re glad you liked the post!

Nice post! I think it is super interesting reading about our peers opinions on a topic like masks mandates during a pandemic! I was surprised at the high amount of people who agree that the government is not doing enough or that the pandemic isn’t being handled seriously. Honestly, from what I have seen on social media from other people our age, I would have thought the number would’ve been lower – but I am grateful to be wrong!

Overall I like your post, I was having a little bit of trouble following it but I think some great points were made. I was interested in why most people thought the government wasn’t doing enough and what they think we could do better. Your results were very interesting and overall I enjoyed seeing what other people viewed on these issues.

With 62.5% answering no and a 18.75% answering maybe for their response as to how well they think the government has been handling the pandemic I think it is fair to say that the virus was not handled in a great way. However I would argue that we probably wouldn’t want the government to be the ones that handle the issue as there were 90% that answered the felt that the pandemic has polarized the country. So my answer would be that we as a country need to figure out a way to come together even if it is only meeting halfway instead of fighting about what works and what doesn’t on social media. This is obviously harder said that done, but I would think this would kill two birds with one stone. What do you think? Good post overall with interesting results and ideas about those results.

Great post! I find it interesting that 80% of the class thought the government was not doing enough to stop the spread of the pandemic. I also wasn’t surprised at all that almost the entire class agreed that the politicization of the pandemic is dividing the country.
