Visiting Lecturer Jeff Byrum discusses his coaching services and the rolling out of an expanded set of activities for both residential and online MHA students this upcoming fall.
How has your experience in providing coaching services to master’s students influenced the development of new activities for the MHA program?
It helped open my eyes on how promising our next generation of healthcare leaders are. I am the type of person when something is of benefit to our shared purpose in healthcare and it is fun and engaging why not do more of it!
What specific new activities and resources are you rolling out for both residential and online MHA students, and how do you envision these enhancements benefiting their learning experience?
For all MHA students starting in fall 2024, just simply engage with me (more information coming directly to you via Canvas in late summer).
- Anxious about finding a job or fellowship? I was too. Let’s get a plan together.
- Don’t know how to prepare and ask for a pay increase? Neither did I. Let’s talk.
- Networking with others in healthcare. I had to get better … what worked for me.
- Mistakes I made early in my career as a local healthcare executive. Learn from me.
- Get noticed and prove your professional value. Tangible ways you can do this.
Being a current student in the MHA program you will get access to these through our rebooted MHA coaching program (for those that requested in-person coaching sessions). Simply jump on the live video calls to listen in and/or participate as we learn from others. I will lead the conversations along with local hospital executives, leaders, and faculty.
Can you explain how you tailor your coaching approach to meet the diverse needs of residential versus online MHA students?
One of my top priorities is that both our online AND residential MHA students jump on the group coaching video calls TOGETHER with me. We are all part of the IU MHA family now. We face similar hurdles in our careers, so like a good family, let us lean on each other.
What feedback have you received from students about the coaching services, and how has this feedback shaped the expansion of these activities?
You ready for this … these are actual outcomes from our most recent MHA students:
- Prepared for, executed, and got the job we coached on.
- Use a tactful combo of merit and market data to get a pay increase.
- Left a toxic job environment, but we set a plan to do it the right way.
- Role modeled professional networking intros (and got follow ups).
- Made a major career change from clinical to non-clinical, but planned for it.
How do you balance the demands of coaching and teaching to ensure that all students receive high-quality support and guidance in their professional development?
Helping lead my wonderful Boone County, Indiana hospital through a pandemic finally taught me balance. It forced me to. I know coaching and teaching is not all on me. We have an amazing team here at the school AND connections in local healthcare leadership that will jump on these group coaching video calls as we make ourselves better. Join us!
