We asked our student ambassadors, “Do you like to listen to music while you study, or do you prefer to study in silence?”
Kate Colpetzer, Health Services Management student
Music can be a great medium for students to focus and relax during their study sessions.
There are thousands of study playlists on YouTube that students can use to make studying less dull and more engaging.
Lucy Khatib, Epidemiology student
For long study sessions, I always make sure to have some relaxing music playing. For me I always go to the Gymnopedies by Erik Satie. I usually have these songs on repeat. Personally, I can’t focus on homework with songs that involve words.
Classical music is a way for me to have some background noise but nothing to distract me while I’m reading. I would recommend having a few go to study songs that get you in the mood to work hard🎶📚 What do you listen to when studying or working?
Jaida Speth, Health Services Management student
It may seem counterintuitive, but music can actually make you a more effective studier! A big part of the effectiveness is finding the best music for you to have on in the background as you study.
Calming music with fewer lyrics can work best most of the time, but it really depends on the day for me and how focused I am on my external study environment.
I have reaped each and every benefit of listening to music while studying that I have listed, but that may not be the case for some. As our FSPH ambassadors mentioned last week, everyone learns differently!
