Degrees: B.A. Psychology, Minor Sociology – Indiana University, 2015; Master of Health Administration – Indiana University, 2018
Why did you choose your major/program?
To be equipped with knowledge and skills to help impact healthcare through leadership opportunities. In addition, I wanted to learn healthcare operations and ways to improve processes that impact clinical care.
Briefly describe your career path.
Upon grading in 2018 I was selected for a fellowship with the Eastern Kansas VA Healthcare System. In this role I worked under the guidance of the medical director (CEO), and served as the telehealth manager for the system. I partnered with the regional leadership team to implement a virtual telehealth hub, which allowed our psychiatrists to provide remote services for veterans across six states in the Midwest. I was also instrumental in establishing the lean management huddle boards across the system, and implementing high reliability tools.
After my time in Kansas, I relocated to the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago. In this capacity, I served as the business performance improvement consultant. I led multidisciplinary project teams that addressed critical clinical care issues. I had the pleasure of working closely with our CMOs and physician & nurse leaders to implement new processes to reduce healthcare associated infections. I also helped advise our executive leadership team on the strategic direction and vision of the performance improvement department.
I now find myself working in the health insurance field with Centene Corporation. I am a member of our Ambetter business line, which provides marketplace (ACA) insurance in over 26 states. As a business analyst with the sales team, I help other teams utilize data insights to drive member retention and strategic communications. With my team being newly formed, I play a critical role in standardizing processes and utilizing new tools/programs to efficiently meet our objectives.
Describe what an average day for you might be like.
A typical day involves meeting with stakeholders to better understand data and business needs that our team can provide to assist them with better serving our members. I frequently collaborate with the data scientists and data analysts on my team to derive insights from their projects. I complete quite a bit of administrative functions such as creating standard work forms, managing dashboards, and process mapping. The remainder of my time is spent on special initiatives not directly aligned with my role, and this keeps things very interesting!
