Accomplishments
Rachel Gerber — completed over 60 hours of training and passed the national exam through the Center for Credentialing and Education to become a board-certified career coach.
Kristin Varella — With her help, the Office of Engaged Learning was able to secure two grants from the Women’s Philanthropic Leadership Council and a generous gift from a private donor. They also have a proposal currently under review by The Lilly Foundation. All of these funds strengthen the office’s ability to provide access to innovative research opportunities and supportive residential experiences for underrepresented students in STEM disciplines.
Jessica Staten — As of December 9, Jess completed a two-year term as co-chair of NACADA’s Race, Ethnicity, and Inclusion Work Group, which evaluated the Association through the lens of inclusiveness as it relates to diversity. The impact of this work will develop over the next three years as the Association undergoes structural reviews to bring about positive, inclusive change to the most prominent professional development organization for academic advisors.
Adrienne Sewell — Won a NACADA Outstanding Advisor Administrator Award, 2021.
Diana Dingman — 2021 NACADA Outstanding Advising Award – Primary Advising Role Certificate of Merit Recipient. 2021 Terri Nation Award – This prestigious award recognizes the exceptional achievements of a member of Bloomington Academic Advising Council (BAAC) and honors Terri Nation who was, for many years, an outstanding academic advisor and friend on the IUB campus.
Paul Fogleman — Worked with IU senior, Elvin Irihamye, was selected as one of 32 Rhodes scholars in November of this year. Also in November, 59 IU students submitted applications for Critical Language Scholarships for summer 2022. Back in February, IU was designated a ‘top-producing’ Fulbright institution for both the student and faculty Fulbright award programs.
Drew Koke — Has a chapter coming out in a collection of essays:
- “Professorial Power: Or, Limiting My Classroom Control to Create Opportunities for Others.” In Robinson, Jennifer Meta, Valerie Dean O’Loughlin, Katherine D. Kearns, and Laura Plummer, eds. Teaching as if Learning Matters: Next Generation of Faculty Learn to Teach in Higher Education. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2022.
Molly Burke – Recently hosted a round table at the national College Reading and Learning Conference.
David Owen — Is the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions liaison with the Association of Chiropractic Colleges and impending chair for the NACADA Health Professions Advising Steering Committee. He was also co-presenter at the CAAHP meeting.
Rachel Tolen — published two articles:
- “Advising Strategies to Promote Stronger Preparation for Graduate and Professional School” in the NACADA publication Academic Advising Today.
- “Ritual and Authority in Premedical Advisory Committee Evaluation Processes” in The Advisor: The Journal of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.
Melissa Blunck and Angie Gast – After a year in which Covid shut down summer undergraduate research programs (2020), in 2021, IUUR not only ran a full slate of summer research programs but actually scaled the program up by about 30%. To get around the Covid space restrictions in research labs, they used undergraduate teaching lab space that is available in the summer and ran pods of students working on similar projects under the supervision of graduate students/professor teams. Additionally, Melissa has provided terrific leadership for the Women in STEM Living-Learning Community. This has become especially clear during the pandemic, as the community had the leadership skills to navigate building community through Zoom during the last academic year and to safely return to in-person gatherings this fall.
