This series introduces new UE employees to existing units and seasoned UE employees to the latest news and updates. This newsletter’s unit is the Student Academic Center (SAC).
The SAC serves all undergraduate students on the IUB campus. Perhaps they’re a student struggling with their academics and worried about completing their education successfully, a Kelley student who wants to explore their creative side, a high-achieving student who’s missing a sense of joy and social connection, or someone who is looking for more intentionality and purpose in study habit formation. All of our students should feel a sense of meaning, purpose, and joy in their education, and the SAC helps them to do just that.
What’s new: student needs and course offerings open to students right now!
Right now, IUB undergraduate students need more help than ever managing stress and anxiety, controlling their attention and focus, and finding places where they feel like they belong socially. In response to these needs, all SAC programming has grown to emphasize helping students develop strong social connections, practice self-compassion, and empower themselves through manageable action. One particular place we do this is through the classes we teach for credit.
In fact, the Student Academic Center has some room in two of our most important classes right now for Spring 2025. If you know of a student who is struggling, one of these classes will surely help:
-
For students who would like to upgrade their academic skills, getting more out of their classes and improving their GPA: EDUC-X150. Two credits, graded A-F, 8 weeks. More info here.
- For students who would like to meet weekly with their own personal academic coach, set weekly goals, and have some accountability: EDUC-X156. Two credits, graded A-F, 8 weeks. More info here.
Curious about what other courses we typically offer students throughout the academic year? We have classes that help students with:
- Holistic recovery from academic difficulty
- Difficult course subjects like math and accounting
- How to choose a new major as you learn more about yourself
- Special topics like using gaming to foster resilience, unlocking your creativity, and tackling test anxiety
What else does the SAC offer besides classes? Take a look!:
- PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions): High-impact tutoring for many difficult classes
- Academic coaching: One-on-one help with any academic skill
- Video help series: Students can work at their own pace on their own time
The SAC has received incredible support from colleagues in advising and career coaching in 2024, and the biggest need for the SAC for 2025 is to continue to work with partners in Undergraduate Education to help students find services, classes, and coaching that would benefit them. AMES and CESE are such important partners for the SAC, and they help spread the word about the SAC’s offerings.
Now you can spread the word about the SAC’s offerings too!
Thank you! The SAC is…
