The title of this post, “Forward ever, backward never”, is a quote from Kwame Nkrumah, the man who looked into the future and actualized his dream of a Ghana free of colonial rule. This prodigious leader was the revolutionary who led Ghana’s fight to gain independence. And before going to Ghana, I had no idea about who he was or how Ghana was the first African country to be free from European colonization. All throughout my time in Ghana, I was taken aback by almost every Ghanaian’s ability to speak to me about current events happening around the world and happening in my own country. The lack of knowledge on many Americans part shocked me when contrasted with the amount of knowledge the Ghanaians held. There is nothing to say in my defense as to why these people could learn so much about my own country with less resources than I had while I barely knew anything about theirs with an overabundance of information at my fingertips. To say the least, it was a humbling experience. I clearly saw that I needed to be more invested in understanding the entire world and not only the corner I live in. Going forward, I plan on continuing to learn and understand the ways of the world in a deeper way for my next time in Ghana.
