Gus Gott! (Hello),
My name is Jenna Hardin and I am a music education major at the IU Jacobs School of Music. I will be a senior this coming fall. I am spending six weeks in the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria studying German and music performance skills. Over the past two weeks, I have been exposed to beautiful scenery, delicious authentic Viennese cuisine, and the intricate architecture that comes with Eastern European buildings. I have sat outside the Vienna State Opera house and watched a riveting performance of La Traviata with world-renowned vocalists. I also attended the annual Summer Night Concert held at the Schönbrunn Palace where the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performed a free concert for the public. In our German class, we take excursions into the city, which is like walking into a painting, where we have to order food and ask questions all in German. For my performance studies, I have the privilege of working with the principal clarinetist in the State Opera orchestra, a professor at the Vienna Conservatory of Music, and a permanent guest of the Vienna Philharmonic. I have never felt more elated and this inspired to improve my clarinet playing until I had a lesson with him. Never having been outside of the US, this has been a culture shock for me, but has made me more independent and has forced me to come out of my shell. It has been such a wonderful experience and I can’t wait to see what else the next four weeks has in store!
