General notes about scheduling and stage work
With few exceptions, part time positions at Indiana University are governed by a 29 hour/week rule, meaning you are limited to only working 29 hours per weeks across all university part time positions that you may hold. To aid in scheduling for performances, we use a 116 per 4 week schedule, to ensure that the average weekly hours total remains at 29 or below. This means that you may work 40 hours in a week, but will be limited to only 18 the next. It is the responsibility of the employee, along with MAC supervisors, to ensure you do not exceed 29 hours per week on average. If you hold any other part time position at IU, you should make sure that your supervisor is aware.
In general, crews are scheduled in two categories – day work and show call. Daytime work is generally between 8AM-5PM. Show calls are generally 6PM-11PM.
Rehearsal and Show Call Availability to work a show call will usually also mean you need to be available for all rehearsals as well. For IUOBT Opera’s and Ballet’s the rehearsal schedule is usually Monday-Thursday 6PM-11PM (5PM start for wardrobe) the week of the performance, as well as the Thursday, Friday, and Sunday preceding for technical rehearsals.
Stage Blacks and Attire Show calls require crew to wear stage blacks which consist of long black pants, black shirt (no printing), and dark colored shoes.
Tools A full set of tools are available for stage crew but it is recommended that stagehands equip themselves with a 6-8″ C-Wrench and multitool. Please ensure these tools are tethered to you.
Training and Resources
IU Employee Resources Website
IU Part-Time MAC staff members are paid bi-weekly. The minimum wage for Indiana University part-time staff is $10.15/hr but MAC staff minimum is $12/hr as determined by the Jacobs School of Music. Wage increases are based on position and merit.
Kuali FAQ (Time Card Corrections, Missed Punch)
It is the responsibility of the employee to ensure they are clocking in when they begin work and clocking out when they are released for the day. If you fail to clock in or out, there are tools within Kuali to submit a missed punch to correct your time. If you cannot correct your clock via the Kuali features, you must email your supervisor with the exact time and day of the correction of your time-card. You may also be required to fill out a missed punch form to submit. (This is called a paper trail.)
Broadly, IU Part-Time employees are limited to 29 hours per week (or 116 hours per 4 week period) across all IU departments. While it is the responsibility of your supervisor not to schedule you over that number of hours, because this limitation applies to ANY IU part-time work, regardless of department, it is also the employees responsibility to ensure they communicate availability and potential over-time issues. Exceptions around show weeks are made to accommodate the greater number of hours by limiting hours in the following weeks.
