Score Info:

• Composer Shulamit Ran has provided us with the piano/vocal score with the most recent edits finalized just a few weeks ago in October! Thanks to Cynthia Stacy and the PED / Music Library team, you are able to pick up a hard copy at your convenience during business hours.
• From Cynthia: “To make sure no one gets the wrong material or that we don’t run out of copies for principals, I’d prefer the principal singers come to the orchestra library to pick up a score for preparation. The full piano-vocal scores are spiral bound, rather than in binders, for ease of identification. If principal singers don’t know exactly where the PED is, they can ask any of our circulation workers at the desk for guidance!” 
• If you see her, please do express gratitude to Cynthia who has prepared these scores for the principal cast above and beyond her role with the ensembles division!

Policy statement regarding enrollment (NEW!)

Please note that in order for singers cast to perform a role, enrollment as a student during the Spring 2023 semester will be verified. For doctoral students, enrollment in MUS-G 901 satisfies this requirement. For additional clarification about this policy, please contact opera@indiana.edu.

Important Dates:

• Maestro Week and Staging Rehearsals will be held 4:30-6:30 p.m. and 7:30-10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10-1 and 2-5 p.m. Saturday on the dates listed below.
• Wandel rehearsals will be held 4:25-6:40 p.m. on the dates listed below, followed by a spacing rehearsal 2/23 (8-10 p.m.) and piano tech 2/24 (8-11 p.m.)
• Piano dress rehearsal begins at 6 p.m., call times TBD
• Orchestra dress rehearsals begin at 7 p.m., call times TBD
• Performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

About Music Coaching

About Maestro Week

“Maestro Week” refers to the week before staging begins, when the conductor of the opera holds music rehearsals. All roles should be completely prepared and mostly memorized by the start of this week, which is generally 5 weeks in advance of a show opening. Rehearsals during maestro week are held 4:30-6:30 p.m. and 7:30-10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10-1 and 2-5 Saturday.

Musical Preparation Timeline

If you have questions about role preparation, please email opera@indiana.edu. Below is a rough timeline leading up to opening night.

As soon as you are cast in a role
Order a piano vocal score to begin score preparation and study. Talk with your voice teacher to create a role preparation timeline and plan.

3 months in advance of opening
Musical preparation should be underway. A formal coaching schedule is not typically set during this time, but if singers would like to request help as they musically prepare a role, they may receive coaching (free of charge) by emailing operamus@indiana.edu.

2 months in advance of opening
Several weeks before Maestro Week, music staff will begin calling singers for coachings. It is expected that singers will arrive to these coachings with their own preparation well underway. You will submit a schedule each week listing your availability for coachings and will be scheduled accordingly.

5 weeks in advance of opening
This week is known as “Maestro Week” when intensive music rehearsals are held. By this time, roles should be well prepared and memorized.

Beginning of staging to opening night
Staging rehearsals begin 4 weeks in advance of opening. Musical coachings and rehearsals are held on an as needed basis during this period.
