Make the most of your 2022 spring break by studying abroad. We have programs – and scholarships – for both graduate and undergraduate students.
Here, Prof. Frank Nierzwicki shares the benefits of studying abroad with a spotlight on Poland. Interested? Submit your application by October 1.
What makes the Poland program special?
NIERZWICKI: Many reasons! Students will have lectures from Polish faculty members, in English, on topics that are common in both Europe and the United States — like urban development, community development, COVID-related local issues, and many more.
We’ll be visiting the capital, Warsaw, which was completely destroyed during WWII. We’ll also visit Krakow, which had very limited damage during the war and is home to some of Poland’s religious and cultural treasures. The trip to Auschwitz is a very moving experience that many prior students on this spring break trip say has given them a personal understanding of the Holocaust.
What type of interactions can students expect to have in Poland?
NIERZWICKI: The Polish people predominately speak English in the areas where we are traveling, and they truly like Americans. They may even ask you if you know their relatives in Chicago!
Why should students study abroad?
NIERZWICKI: I think it is very important for American students to venture outside of our country to experience other cultures and have discussions with Polish faculty and students.
What is one fun fact about you?
NIERZWICKI: I really enjoy eating Polish food! I will make sure students expand their culinary experience on this trip.
What is your favorite part of running international programs?
NIERZWICKI: Helping my students experience Polish food and customs — and also the wondrous transformation of Warsaw into a modern European city following WWII.
What do students have to say about the trip to Poland?
BRAYTON SPANN, former trip member: Poland is one of the more affordable travel destinations in Europe. Traveling was always expensive, and I knew it was something I wanted to do later in my life. When I was presented with the opportunity to study abroad in Poland with one of my favorite professors, my interest was immediately piqued. I took it upon myself to learn more about the trip and knew that this was something that I had to do!
