In early November, Indiana University NextGen Leadership Program students Ella Bell and Khloe Williams had the unique opportunity to travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a retreat hosted by the NextGen Service Corps at the University of New Mexico. The conference brought together students from across the country, all interested in exploring how public service can intersect with STEM fields. The retreat was packed with insightful discussions, expert panels, and valuable networking with students who share a passion for making an impact through public service.
O’Neill student Ella Bell shared, “Getting to attend this event was an incredible opportunity that taught me a lot about careers in public service and STEM. We got to hear from professionals with an abundance of advice and insight into the fields of healthcare, government, education, science, and more.”
One of the most impactful moments for Hamilton Lugar School student Khloe Williams came during a panel led by Tina Cordova, who is the founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium.
“Hearing about the effects of nuclear testing on her community, how she survived thyroid cancer, and her work to get reparations for her community, along with the progress she’s made, encouraged me to continue my advocacy research,” Williams said.
Beyond the panels, the retreat provided a chance to connect with students from universities across the country. “I enjoyed socializing with fellow students from all over the country and getting to hear about their areas of interest at their respective universities,” Bell shared.
This retreat was part of the larger mission of the NextGen Service Corps, a national initiative supported by the Volcker Alliance. At IU, the NextGen Leadership Program brings together students from all majors to explore how they can incorporate public service into their careers, whether they’re pursuing science, business, or other fields.
Reflecting on their experience, Bell said, “Altogether, I’m so grateful for this experience, and I have the Volcker Alliance as well as NextGen Leadership to thank for it.”
Williams added, “I’m thankful for being selected to partake in this opportunity because it better informed my career goals and allowed me to expand my network with like-minded students.”
