John A. Rupp, a clinical associate professor at the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, has been named the recipient of the George V. Cohee Public Service Award by the Eastern Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
The ESAAPG Public Service Award is presented annually to individuals in recognition of their distinguished service and achievement in public affairs. It is granted to recognize the contributions of geologists to the public and encourage geologists to take a more active part in public affairs. Rupp was honored for his years of service working at the intersection of energy and society.
“I’m humbled to be recognized for doing the work that I love, which is conveying to the public information about the world of energy affairs,” Rupp said. “Hopefully, I’ve been able to contribute to the betterment of our society in this process. I’m very inspired by the fact that my work with practitioners, citizens, and students of energy is being recognized as a contribution in this realm. It shows that working with such difficult challenges can result in positive outcomes to society.”
Rupp earned his B.S. in Geology from the University of Cincinnati and his M.S. in Geology from Eastern Washington University. He previously worked as a production geologist with Exxon in the early 1980s before working with the Indiana Geological Survey from 1982-2018. He has been teaching at the O’Neill School since 2012. His areas of interest include energy systems, carbon sequestration, alternative energy, and energy policy.
Rupp will be honored during the 2022 ESAAPG Annual Meeting Oct. 24-26 in Champaign, Illinois.
