Make the most of summer 2022 by studying abroad. We have programs – and scholarships – for both graduate and undergraduate students.
Here, Prof. Glen Salmon shares the benefits of studying abroad with a spotlight on South Africa. Interested? Applications open December 1.
What makes the South Africa summer program special?
SALMON: South Africa remains one of the wildest places on earth. You’ve all seen majestic animals like elephants, zebras, and rhinos in zoos and on video. To be clear — this isn’t that! You’ll see these and many other incredible wildlife species “up close and personal” as we go on safari in the national parks of South Africa. Our in-country guide is LD Van Essen, part professor and part Indiana Jones. He speaks all the native languages, assures our safety, and keeps us on schedule. Bring your comfortable hiking shoes as we cover a lot of ground in the African “bush” as we learn about how another country manages its wildlife and ecosystems.
Why should students study abroad?
SALMON: As an IU student, you have an incredible opportunity to learn about the world via an overseas study program. Regardless of where you’re from — big city or small town — the world is a big place and experiencing a study abroad trip will open your eyes to new perspectives and ideas and reboot your concept of how you fit into it all.
What is one fun fact about you?
SALMON: I am the retired director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Fish and Wildlife. And yes, the last name is Salmon and I actually raised salmon at one point in my career.
What types of students should apply to study abroad in South Africa?
SALMON: Adventurous students only need apply.
What is your favorite part of running international programs?
SALMON: Watching the students learn, stretch themselves, and experience new things.
