Adrian Tanase, senior at O’Neill, shares about his semester exchange in Madrid.
What attracted you to participate in an O’Neill semester exchange?
Having an Eastern European background, I was always interested in studying abroad in Europe. I chose Madrid because a friend of mine did the same program last year and had great things to say that aligned with my interests.
How has studying abroad benefitted you as a person?
Studying abroad gave me many new perspectives. On the surface level, I experienced what it was like to live in a major foreign city, immerse myself in different cultures, and see new parts of the world. However, the thing I will cherish the most is the people. Throughout my time abroad, I met some of the most sincere, curious people that I made genuine friendships with and learned from which I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
What is your favorite memory, story, and/or experience from your semester exchange?
Some of my favorite memories from abroad came from the days in Madrid where a couple friends and I would get €1 coffees or go on late night food runs and explore the city.
What advice do you have for students who are hesitant about going on a semester exchange?
Everybody is just as lost and confused as you. If you are worried about not getting the experience that everyone who goes abroad raves about, be open and it will find you. I’ve never experienced such a welcoming environment of people so excited to interact and try new things. Whether it’s the first day of classes or halfway through the semester, there will always be opportunities to put yourself out there and curate your own ideal abroad experience.
Anything else you would like to share?
It’s never too early or too late. I went as a senior and wouldn’t change a thing.
