William A. Eyden Jr. (1893-1982), born and raised in Richmond, Indiana, was instructed and influenced by his father William Eyden, who was also a skilled and prominent artist.
Eyden studied art and music at Earlham College (he was a skilled violinist in addition to being an excellent painter). Eyden followed the suggestion of his father and studied under John Bundy, Charles Hawthorne, Daniel Garber, and William Merritt Chase at the New York Art Student League. While studying in New York, the younger Eyden also operated a gallery in Greenwich Village where he painted urban street scenes–his favorite thing to paint while in the northeast.
Eyden’s favorite painting subject; however, was clusters of beech woods and woodland scenes, much like the one that hangs in the O’Neill School.
