Steven Sorman was born in Minneapolis in 1948, earned a BFA from the University of Minnesota in 1971, and continues living and working in the state–currently living in Red Wing. Sorman is known for working on a rather large and impressive scale and for his multimedia, complex drawings, paintings, and prints (as well as the embellishment of hand details and the like).
Sorman is considered a master at orchestrating theme through line, color, layer, and media and often hopes his works challenge viewers by presenting them with nuanced movements and rhythms.
Sorman has been active and prolific since the 1970s and has exhibited across the globe including the Stedkijk Museum in the Netherlands, MOMA, the Whitney, the Art Institute in Chicago, and the Walker Art Center. He holds numerous awards as well, including the Bush Foundation Artist’s Fellowship (1979), the SFMOMA Merit Art World Print (1980), and the Bhrat Bhavan International Biennial of Prints Merit Award (1991).
