We recently viewed a series of cybersecurity training videos designed for research scientists. These videos were created as part of the SouthEast SciEntific Cybersecurity for University Research program. These four Cyber Security for Scientists videos provide an accessible overview of the cyberthreats that research projects face, as well as case studies.
“Introduction to Cyber Security and Privacy for Principal Investigators” provides helpful overview of key data issues: confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Examples show how phishing and malware can impact a scientist’s research and reputation.
“Cyberattacks Case 1: How Data was Deleted” provides a real-world example of lost data, time, and money when a research lab was hacked through Windows Remote Desktop.
“Cyber attacks Case 2: Ransomware or Dollars for Data” tells the story of how a research lab’s data is encrypted and held for ransom.
“Cyber attacks Case 3: Deliberate Attack on Scientists’ Reputation” details how an activist group used stolen emails to attack scientists’ reputations before a major conference.
All of these videos illustrate that data is vulnerable to attacks, and also illustrate the negative impacts those attacks can have on data confidentiality, data integrity, and scientific and professional reputation.
