Michael Corn, CISO for the University of California and a member of the ResearchSOC leadership team, will conduct a pre-conference workshop on “Security and Supporting Research Projects: Facilitation Design Patterns” at the upcoming EDUCAUSE Security Professionals conference on Monday, May 13th from 1:00-4:30 PM. This workshop will help prepare security professionals to better support sponsored research projects.
Cyd Burrows-Shilling, Research Facilitator , University of California San Diego, will co-present.
The workshop will provide an overview of how research operates within universities and will teach participants facilitation skills for working with faculty. The workshop will also provide participants with guidance on how to develop a project-specific security plan that meets the requirements of NSD, DoD, and other sponsoring organizations.
By working with actual researchers, workshop participants will learn to navigate the gap between the traditional top-down approach to security and the practicalities of everyday research lab infrastructures.
The workshop has as outcomes:
- Increasing participants’ understanding of how research projects differ from classic enterprise administrative environments
- Obtaining facilitation skills for working with faculty and researchers
- Learning how to use specific tools and templates designed for working with research projects.
Separate registration is required for this additional fee program (event has passed).
This workshop is organized by the ResearchSOC project. The ResearchSOC is focused on bringing together the diverse information security and research communities by fostering the mutual understanding of perspectives and by providing a suite of operational cybersecurity services to make scientific cyberinfrastructure resilient to cyberattacks and capable of supporting trustworthy, productive research. The ResearchSOC provides a suite of technologies, services, and training specifically designed for research and education projects.
Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF award 1840034), the ResearchSOC is a collaborative security response center that is led by cybersecurity expertise of the Indiana University Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR), the national leader in cybersecurity for research and education. ResearchSOC combines existing cybersecurity services from CACR and the university’s School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering; Duke University; the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center; and the University of California San Diego. ResearchSOC’s management team includes both CISOs and leaders from the research community.
The Research Security Operations Center (ResearchSOC) is a collaborative security response center that addresses the unique cybersecurity concerns of the research community.
