Zachary Crouch
Q: Where were you prior to MSHM? (Undergrad major, undergrad university, job?)
A: Before the MSHM program, I worked as a Student Services Coordinator at the IU School of Education. I earned my undergraduate degree in secondary education from the same institution. In that role, I was able to save money and have the time to research and select the ideal graduate program before enrolling.
Q: What are you most excited about for this coming year?
A: The aspect I’m most excited about for the coming year is the opportunity to engage in the practicum. With my background in secondary education, I’ve been eager to immerse myself in a healthcare-related role and gain hands-on experience from industry professionals. This practical experience is a crucial step in applying my academic knowledge to real-world scenarios and advancing my career.
Q: What does it mean to you to “Lead for the Greater Good”?
To me, “Lead for the Greater Good” means embodying true leadership by going beyond assigned responsibilities and prioritizing the well-being of others. It involves striving to create the greatest positive impact for the largest number of people. A leader’s role is to support and uplift those around them, ensuring that everyone, even those not directly under their supervision, is valued and cared for. Effective leadership means fostering an environment where the collective benefit is always at the forefront.
Q: What types of roles are looking for post-graduation?
A: After graduation, I aim to enter the healthcare and business consulting sector, with a long-term goal of becoming a Chief Operations Officer (COO), Chief Information Officer (CIO), or Chief of Staff (COS) within a major hospital system. Starting in consulting will allow me to gain exposure to various aspects of the healthcare industry, which is crucial for effective leadership. I believe that a well-rounded leader should have experience across different facets of the industry, even if they are not experts in every area. This broad understanding is essential for making informed decisions, particularly in an industry where every choice can significantly impact patient outcomes and hospital operations.
Q: Do you feel supported by program faculty and staff?
A: Initially, I was uncertain about the level of support I would receive from the faculty and staff, fearing that I might be treated as just another number in the cohort. However, from the very first day, my concerns were alleviated. Meeting Director Grudi was a particularly warm and welcoming experience. She immediately reassured me that, despite my background and lack of direct healthcare experience, I would be provided with the tools and connections necessary for success. This supportive atmosphere has been consistently reinforced throughout my time in the program. Director Grudi, the MSHM staff, and faculty members O’Neil and Kelly have all offered extensive support and guidance, contributing significantly to my positive experience.
Q: Do you feel connected to your peers (in your cohort)?
A: I consider myself extremely fortunate to be part of my current cohort. My colleagues have consistently made efforts to support each other both professionally and academically. Beyond that, there has been a genuine effort to connect on a personal level, fostering a strong sense of community and camaraderie. This combination of professional collaboration and personal interaction has greatly enriched my experience and strengthened my connection with my peers.
Q: What is your favorite part of the MSHM program thus far?
A: My favorite part of the MSHM program has been the time spent with my fellow peers. I initially worried that I would have limited opportunities to build relationships beyond faculty and staff, but my experiences so far have exceeded those expectations. Whether we’re meeting up to explore the local Bloomington area or collaborating on classwork, the connections I’ve formed with my classmates have been incredibly rewarding. I’m confident that I’ll leave this program with several lifelong bonds.
