This week absolutely flew by! It was full of exciting updates and progress towards programs during my internship and beyond into my career.
I was able to chat with the Children’s Strategist about a partnership opportunity between MCPL and my IU graduate assistantship department – the African American Arts Institute (AAAI). In my former career as an arts educator and administrator, I loved forming partnerships with other community organizations so this felt really great to do with MCPL. The African American Dance Company (within AAAI) will create an interactive virtual dance program for MCPL’s YouTube and MCPL’s video premiere will also serve as marketing for AAAI’s upcoming performances. This is something I foresee doing a lot of in my career as a public librarian! This conversation also brought up the topic of a public library’s role in supporting other community organizations’ work which was really intriguing.
This week involved a lot of preparations for the History Hangout take & make – counting out lunch sacks, punching paper circles, cutting paper money, etc. I found an incredible video of Mo Willems showing how he creates and draws a game called Super Bounce with his family – for use in the History Hangout program! I also needed to finish up some seed experiment take & makes and assists with some paper butterfly cutouts =)
A fun tidbit from this week was learning about all of the staff picks displays that exist in the children’s department. Right now there is Black History month, In the News, Social-Emotional Learning and Staff Picks (any topic). IF I had more time during the week, I’d be recommending titles right and left. This correlates really nicely with my Seminar course entitled “Trends in Youth Literature” so some picks may be on the way!
