The Joachim Herz Doctoral School has launched a new doctoral program on the topic of “Law and Transformation” for the winter term 2023/24.
The school is based at the Leuphana University Lüneburg in Northern Germany, an institution dedicated to transformation studies with a particular focus on social, educational, sustainability-related, and legal aspects. Transferred to the context of the doctoral school, this results in a focus (of its structured Ph.D. program) on social changes such as the climate crisis, decarbonization, digitalization, international conflicts, etc. All these factors have in common that they impose the need for transformation on law. But it is also a factor for transformation. Through the law, processes of change can be steered and organized, and it can be ensured that such changes take place with full democratic legitimacy and compliance with procedural requirements.
Against this backdrop, the doctoral school seeks cooperation partners to expand its transformation-focused research beyond the context of its home university and to generate research insights from multiple perspectives. Due to the special relationship of its namesake to the United States and because of the fundamental nature of transatlantic relations, the Joachim Herz Doctoral School is highly interested in joint projects with universities and scholars from across the Atlantic.
