This summer I will send tips aimed to help you as you update (or create) your syllabus and course for the Fall. Also, if you would like to meet about your course this summer, just respond to this email to schedule a consultation (face-to-face or Zoom).
Many of the tips I will write about are aimed at creating an equitable classroom by providing scaffolds (or supports) that some students may need to be successful in your course. ALL students benefit from these practices.
The following form (The Roadmap to Success) was developed at UC Berkley: https://go.iu.edu/4qJH
The Roadmap to Success should be assigned very early in the semester (first 3 weeks) and is meant to be a relatively brief, but useful tool to help students:
- chart a path to success in each class,
- identify resources to support their work across the semester,
- reflect on previous academic success and translate lessons learned to the work in the current course, and
- clarify academic success expectations between faculty and students.
IF you have students submit the form, you can get an idea of how they plan for your course and encourage successful strategies for passing your course based.
For example, if a student says they plan to spend 30 minutes each week studying; you can include a note in the directions for the assignments (and a reminder in the lecture) to let students know that it will take approximately 2 hours to complete the assignment. Small tips like this can help students plan for your course who may not be used to planning out time for all their responsibilities as an independent student.
