Mentoring is a great way to get people excited about science, and I was fortunate to have that experience as an undergraduate, which really set me on the path to a research career.

LHSI 2012-13, IUPUI Graduate 2015
A graduate student named Aarti… really looked out for me and still does to this day to make sure I’m doing okay. There aren’t many women in science, and if so you’re the abnormality. I’m not saying it’s always the case, but it’s lot harder for women than men to voice their thoughts and ideas. It’s just sometimes nice to have someone to lean on who knows what you’re going through.

Our first intern group celebrated the end of the year with the first LHSI poster session on April 11, 2008. My, how we’ve grown since then.

Interns always bring fresh ideas, numerous questions and a lot of energy, all of which drive us to rethink and revisit everything we do. Interns also contribute significantly to refine the standard procedures and techniques that we follow and thereby help us relearning them for further improvement.

Congratulations to Dr. Adams for being named one of the Indianapolis Business Journal’s Forty Under 40. She is an LHSI mentor!
Inspired in part by her brother—who was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, causing severe brain damage—Adams has focused much of her career on patient care. Her work involves efforts to transform health care by building strong connections between academia and health care.

Interns who participate in the LHSI blogging initiative have an added bonus of being entered in drawings to win LHSI memorabilia. The prompts that they can answer each week directly relate to the ePDP prompts, so the blogging initiative induces more frequent reflection. It also saves time in the long run because interns already have smaller drafts of what they have been working on at their sites all throughout the year that they can put directly into their more polished ePDPs.
Congrats to Daniel Bose for winning this round of drawings! Read his blog post here: comfortable

Check out this impressive article about one of our LHSI mentors who is sending rodents to space:
Dr. Kacena takes bone healing study into space
Melissa Kacena, PhD, associate professor of orthopedic surgery, returned to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center last weekend to guide astronauts aboard the International Space Station through reconstructive surgery as part of the #RodentResearchIV mission. Dr. Kacena and her team sent dozens of mice into space on the SpaceX rocket, which launched Feb. 19, to test a form of bone-healing therapy with the potential to help people with traumatic bone injuries.
For the past several years, Dr. Kacena has worked with the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Army to study the therapy, which could prove effective in treating soldiers injured in IED explosions.

Not only did a myriad of LHSI students rank in the Top 100 juniors and seniors at IUPUI, but Elyse Feder, Casey Seiferman, and Kyle McElyea ranked in the Top 10! Congrats to all for this accomplishment and for representing LHSI.
