I think that Alphabet Inc should be held to a higher standard than a publisher of a newspaper in a small town because Alphabet Inc’s reach to more people in the public is much wider. The small town publisher is only able to give out information to those in the small town while the Alphabet Inc can spread information and online content to anyone who has the internet. The internet facilitates the exchange of views and communications regarding everything, especially politics. The US highly values individual speech and other speeches protected by the First Amendment. The Supreme Court has recognized many types of unprotected speech, which typically is with serious harms and few benefits for society. The book says “content shared through social media sticks around because technologies are designed to enable persistence.” This is why I feel that there needs to be a higher standard set to impose liability with online conduct. Alphabet Inc would be responsible for the information that has a huge visibility ratio and the permanence of it being on the internet. Things that are harmful need to be regulated for public safety. The internet is not to be taken lightly and there needs to be a fine line between protected free speech and speech that can harm many due to the open access to the public.
Blog 4: Consensual Hallucinations
Upon reading and reflection, the phrase “consensual hallucination experienced daily by millions” slightly captures the reality of cyberspace communications. It makes it sound like deja vu in this description which I don’t find accurate. However, I do agree that the communication is consensual interactions in cyberspace. I have watched a couple episodes of Black Mirror and it was very interesting. The concepts demonstrated a negative view on the technological advancements occurring in the world. I say negative because most of the episodes were depressing and ended badly. However, there were some characters who had considered the risks of technology and ended with happy endings. The overall message seems to be that if we aren’t careful, technology will ruin our lives. To that extent, I believe these highly immersive virtual realities are accurately depicted with the phrase consensual hallucinations. It shows unthinkable complexities and sort of makes me think of the science fiction in Avatar. It is technology that is so unthinkable being brought to life via screens. It makes me wonder when we will hit the cap of how far we can go in innovation. At some point, people are going to loss their ability to tell what is real and what is not.

I don’t believe it should be given the same self-determination as the citizens of the 13 colonies. The 1996 Declaration of Independence for cyberspace states “You claim there are problems among us that you need to solve. You use this claim as an excuse to invade our precincts.” I believe that the cyberspace realm needs to be invaded as it isn’t completely figured out and there are problems that will need to be solved. The 1776 Declaration of Independence established self-determination but it also gave room for error as it wasn’t perfectly constructed government. They are similar in stating the current problems and why this might be a solution. Both send the message that they are here to stay and aren’t going to be scared away by other countries or by humans trying to get rid of the cyber space. There definitely needs to be control over cyber space and while there can be self-determination to an extent, it needs to be monitored and invaded by proposed laws throughout the world. Civilization will be created on the internet much like how it was in America. There always has to be some policing in order to maintain balance and order without complete chaos.

Life would be completely different if Apple didn’t change everything with the app store. Wanting to watch tv? Easy fix! Just watch it on your phone screen whenever you want by downloading apps such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, etc. Want to color or play games without having a physical book in front of you? Easy! Just download an app. There is an app for every single aspect of our lives and social media apps to share thoughts and ideas on. Networking has never been easier with the invention of the app store for Apple. Zoom was an important app from the app store that was utilized during COVID. Music has also been significantly changed with streams on music apps such as Apple Music and Spotify which were not a thing before Apple’s invention of the app store. Life would be much more boring without the app store. Communication through texts and calls would still be a thing without the app store but the easy features of all the apps would make life much harder. Having to download music on an MP3 player was always annoying, especially doing it through Limewire. My life would be different because my screen time would be significantly lower which would be a good thing but it would be filled with doing harder tasks as things like directions, how to videos, and more wouldn’t be as easy to figure out.
The Metaverse
The metaverse makes things easier with the seamlessly easy digital advancements made. I think having the metaverse might alter some people’s sense of reality if they are immersed in the metaverse for too long. As a soon to be lawyer, I can see the pros and cons and make arguments for both sides of the metaverse. However, I personally believe the advancement could be a good thing as long as it isn’t rushed in developments. For jobs, I think there could be an elimination of jobs with the advancement of technology continuing. However, people might commit more crime while in these virtual realities. The defense would not work out so well for the people when blaming it on the fact that they were in the metaverse when committing a crime. There is going to have to be some serious law making done in the future around the metaverse to make sure that it doesn’t get out of hand. The metaverse is going to change the world for the better with the more people who use it. Currently, there are surgeons using it to be guided during complicated surgeries. This alone can save someone’s life just because of the technological advancement. I anticipate things becoming easier and more convenient with the growth of metaverse throughout time.
