Over the last decade and accelerating in the wake of the 2022 US Supreme Court decision that struck down Roe v Wade, individual US states have introduced legislation to limit access to abortion. Many of these laws are based on gestational age, which is the standard dating system used to measure the length of a pregnancy in weeks. However, some of these new laws have been proposed or passed based on fetal development markers instead, like detection of heartbeat, ability of fetus to feel pain, and viability of a fetus to survive outside the womb. Dr. Julia Heiman served as the Kinsey Institute’s sixth director from 2004-2013. Her tenure saw significant growth in research and the collections.Dr. Heiman expanded the research component of the Institute, looking at sexual satisfaction & relationship happiness in midlife couples, sexual violence, condom use errors and effective condom fit, stress responses in women with postpartum depression, arousal response in bisexual men, infidelity in heterosexual couples, and the effects of hormonal contraceptives on women’s sexual experience.
Attitudes About Illegal Abortion and Responsibility In America
A new study from Kinsey Institute and Indiana University researchers and their colleagues looks at American attitudes toward issues of responsibility and punishment for illegal abortion. The study used an online survey with responses from 2,489 English and Spanish-speaking US adults, using quota-based sampling. (more…)
Archive Spotlight: June Reinisch Art and Artifacts Collection
In addition to the records of the Kinsey Institute and archives of notable sex researchers and organizations, the Kinsey Institute Special Collections preserve the archives of former Kinsey Institute directors. These document both the day-to-day records of their time as director as well as additional personal materials related to their careers and interests outside of the Institute. In 2022, we received a gift of new cultural artifacts from former director Dr. June Reinisch.
