Be a part of a top-ranked musicology program
One of the leading musicology programs in the nation, the Department of Musicology offers individual attention with all the advantages of an acclaimed conservatory and top research university.
We are a close and friendly community of scholars. Our department has a large and active faculty whose research and teaching cover a wide range of fields and a variety of scholarly approaches, as well as affiliates in the Center for the History of Music Theory and Literature, Historical Performance Institute, Latin American Music Center, and the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology. We offer M.A., M.A./M.L.S., and Ph.D. degrees and strong financial aid, plus the resources of a research university and the outstanding Cook Music Library .
Department life centers around the Musicology Colloquium and Professional Development Workshop Series, where we gather weekly to present and discuss research by graduate students and faculty members. Masters students participate in a Musicology Reading Group to discuss recent scholarship. Ph.D. seminars and methods courses and M.A. seminars offer opportunities for close work with faculty and fellow students. Members of the department spearhead a variety of scholarly, musical, pedagogical, and public outreach initiatives. The Graduate Musicology Association and numerous departmental get-togethers—from picnics to concerts—reinforce our sense of community.
