We are proud to announce that Alison Mero (Ph.D., 2014), along with co-editor Christina Fuhrmann, has been awarded the H. Robert Cohen / RIPM Award for their book Opera and British Print Culture in the Long Nineteenth Century (Clemson University Press, 2023).
The H. Robert Cohen / RIPM Award recognizes exceptional scholarship on eighteenth- to twentieth-century music periodical literature. The award committee praised the volume for its innovative exploration of how opera—a “living, performative art”—was shaped and disseminated through print culture. Through newspapers, periodicals, librettos, playbills, and scores, opera reached new audiences and became intertwined with broader cultural conversations. The book’s twelve essays examine topics such as the use of print to shape public personas, opera’s impact on literature, and the ways issues of class, gender, and nationalism permeated writing about opera and its performances.

Dr. Mero, currently Executive Managing Editor of Clemson University Press, has built a distinguished career at the intersection of musicology and publishing. This award highlights her commitment to advancing scholarship and her contributions to the study of nineteenth-century music and culture.
Congratulations to Dr. Mero on this well-deserved recognition!
