Just a couple of weeks ago, March 11th marked the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger’s original release in 1995; those who grew up with an SNES or know lots of video game music already know that this soundtrack (and game!) is a beautiful classic. Featuring all of the nostalgic goodness of now-primitive hardware, the music in Chrono Trigger is one of the most celebrated showcases of 16-bit music. No, you won’t hear sounds of a live orchestra here, but the quality of writing and ‘synthestration’ in both Mitsuda and Uematsu’s work achieves a sound that seemed ahead of its time. I hope you’ll take a listen this week to this stunning collection of music as classes begin again to get your gears turning (see what I did there?)!
