Nationally recognized ensemble New Morse Code will be joined by composers Christopher Stark and Andy Akiho in hosting a public workshop Saturday morning, October 30th, at the John Hay Center in Salem, Indiana. Audience members can participate in collecting sounds from their environment while exploring the intersection between creativity, music, resilience, and sustainability. An afternoon performance by New Morse Code at the Salem Middle School Auditorium will include a new ‘community’ musical work featuring the unique sounds of Salem, Indiana.
As Grand Prize Winners of the Ariel Avant Impact Performance Prize, the duo – Hannah Collins, cello, and Michael Compitello, percussion – has launched a major national initiative, linking the science of sustainability to the communicative power of the arts. While exploring intersections between environmental resilience and music, the duo encourages similar consideration of one’s individual relationship with environmental resilience.
The New Morse Code project is part of a residency at Indiana University, hosted by the Jacobs School’s Office of Entrepreneurship & Career Development, and is part of IU’s Themester 2021: Resilience. Other partners include Arts Midwest and the IU Center for Rural Engagement.
