2015 Dean’s Prizes Announced
The faculty of the Jacobs School of Music Composition Department is pleased to announce results for the following annual internal competitions.
2015 DEAN’S PRIZE COMPOSITION COMPETITION
Category A (Orchestra or Wind Ensemble, $500 prize):
Jay Hurst, Still Lives, for Orchestra
Category B (Chamber/Ensemble, $1000 prize and commission for a new work to be premiered by the New Music Ensemble in 2014-15):
Phillip Sink, Blue Ridge Lights, for sinfonietta
Category C (Undergraduate, $300 prize):

Yie-Eun Chun Anticipates Premiere at Fresh Ink
On May 16th, the Omaha Symphony Orchestra will perform Yie Eun Chun’s new orchestral piece as one of the winners of their new music symposium in Omaha, NE. The symposium will be held during May 14th – 16th, and she will directly work with composer John Corigliano and Maestro Thomas Wilkins during her residency.
Yihan Chen to Receive Orchestral Performance in Beijing
Shui Guang Lian Yan (Ripples Glisten Away…) for SATB chorus was premiered by Cantoría Hong Kong at Hong Kong City Hall on March 31, 2015. The Cantoría will give its second performance at its annual Chamber Choir Showcase on April 20.
Solemn Rites – Daqu No. 1 for Orchestra is to be premiered by China National Opera House Symphony Orchestra at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China in October 2015.
Nicolas Chuaqui’s Chamber Music to Receive Festival Premiere
Nicolas Chuaqui’s Break Free, for violin duo and electronics, will be premiered at Dartmouth College’s Festival of Contemporary American Music on May 8th. The piece was commissioned by Dartmouth and will be performed by New York City-based duo, String Noise.
Tyler Habig Anticipates String Orchestra Premiere
Tyler Habig’s To See and to Feel (The World) will be performed on April 26, 2015 by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis at the Pike Performing Arts Center at 3:00pm. Orcenith Smith of DePauw University will be conducting Tyler’s string orchestra piece along with Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
Corey Rubin’s Clarinet Quartet Receives Honorable Mention
Corey Rubin’s piece Filles, Failles, Faux Femmes, for clarinet quartet, received an honorable mention in the first annual Composition Competition of the Novacane Quartet. The piece will receive a performance during the 2015–16 season.

Matt van Brink (BM ’96) Releases New Recording
Matt van Brink’s Swan Lake Fantasy, a piano suite on themes from Tchaikovsky’s Op.20, was recently released on Schnitzel Music’s label and performed by Matei Varga.
