Electives
All Bachelor’s degree students must complete 9 hours of audio electives chosen from the following courses:
- A320 Sound Reinforcement Techniques (3 cr.)
- P: A202 Audio Techniques III. An introduction to sound reinforcement system design and operation.
- Taught Fall semester only.
- A325 Digital Audio Workstation Seminar (3 cr.)
- P: A202 Audio Techniques III. Advanced digital audio workstation techniques.
- Taught Spring semester only
- A360 Classical Music Recording and Production I (3 cr.)
- P: A202 Audio Techniques III. Study and practice of classical music recording and production, with an emphasis on recording session planning and direction, microphone technique, and editing.
- Taught Spring semester only
- A440 Individual Project in Audio Engineering and Sound Production (1-3 cr.) (May be repeated.)

- A460 Surround Sound and Immersive Audio (3 cr.)
- P or C: A470 Individual Multitrack Studio Projects I. Study and practice of contemporary surround sound and immersive audio recording and mixing techniques.
- Taught Fall semester only
- A471 Individual Multitrack Studio Projects II (3 cr.) (May be repeated; only one instance may be used as an audio elective.)
- P: Grade of B+ or higher in A470 Individual Multitrack Studio Projects I. A grade of A in A471 is required to take A471 a second time. Individual projects in multitrack recording.

- THTR T347 Introduction to Sound Design for the Theater (3 cr.)
- P: THTR-T 101 and THTR-T 125; or consent of instructor. Within the framework of theatrical environments, this course introduces the student to acoustic principles, audio equipment used in theatrical productions, psycho-acoustical considerations, understanding sound signals and how to manipulate them, computer sound mixing systems, and sound design principles.

- THTR T447 Aesthetics of Sound Design I (3 cr.)
- P: THTR-T 347 or consent of instructor. Focuses on theatrical design concept development and implementation. Students are exposed to various design challenges and processes for sound design in a range of production styles and approaches.

Upper Divisional
Admission to the fifth semester (upper division level) of the program will include an individual meeting to evaluate progress and overall performance in the audio program. The evaluation will consider the following:
- A grade of C or better in all audio courses.
- Successful completion of the X090 competency exams.
- Attendance.
- Evaluation reports from faculty and other supervisory personnel.
If deemed unsatisfactory, student will either be given a second chance at the upper divisional the following semester or dismissed from the program.
A440 Individual Study
440 is an independent study course. It is intended for students who are interested in pursuing their own research, audio production, sound for visual media project, or other independent project relevant to their interests. To be approved for A440 students must:
- Have senior standing
- Find a faculty member to supervise the project.
- In consultation with supervising faculty member, create a project proposal.
- Get approval from the chair of the Audio Engineering Department.

A480 Internship
- A480 consists of an on site internship at a facility related to the student’s interests. The choice of facility and activities are left up to the student however approval must be obtained from the instructor
- A480 requires senior standing. Typically it is done during the summer before the senior year, or after all coursework has been completed.
- Prior to enrolling in the internship, the student should meet with the instructor to discuss their goals and options for the internship. Students are solely responsible for making all internship arrangements.
- Internships must be a minimum of 8 weeks in length working at least 20 hours per week, 160 hours total, and can be paid or unpaid. Longer internships are encouraged.
- Once the student decides on an internship and works out an arrangement with the hosting facility, he/she must complete the internship planning sheet and submit it to the faculty supervisor. Once approved, the student will then be authorized to register for A480.
- The internship must be completed during the semester the student is registered for A480. For internships that span more than one semester, student must make arrangements with the instructor before the internship begins.
