My next project involved planning and teaching M501 a graduate proseminar class in music history. I planned and taught a class that showed students how to find background sources using Oxford Music Online. Then I showed students how to find secondary sources using subject-specific databases such as RILM.
One of the biggest concerns that Misti and I identified was the number of international students in the class who spoke English as a second language. Much of my instruction was based around words that are difficult to spell in English. To help all students, I created handouts that included all of the search terms that students could refer to. This allowed all students to keep up with the demonstrations.
Overall, the class went very well and the students seemed to easily grasp the concepts.
