The USA is a country that experiences a lot of constant growth and subsequent elevation in just about every aspect. However, there are some aspects and innovations that the nation has not yet managed to master. One of the most important and harrowing of those yet-to-be-mastered basic aspects (and human rights, in this case) is immigration. Since current president Donald Trump won the election and moved into the oval office, there has been an ongoing stream of controversial decisions and moments of power, and a shocking number of them revolve around immigration and the surrounding issues. The latest decision regarding immigration is one that has resulted in a public outcry from the public, and a stubborn stance from the government and the current president. And it is also incredibly disturbing.
Latest immigration tech is most controversial yet
The latest? It surrounds the concept of immigration technology, and it happens to be a recent development in which the US immigration force literally just spent nearly $1 million ($820,000, to be exact) on a technology designed by company GrayShift that allows the government to hack into the phones of immigrants as they attempt to cross the border into the country. Immigration experts have divided opinions on this tech, but the outpouring of definitive disgust by the public has made it abundantly clear that the acquirement of the world’s most advanced iPhone hacking technology, used for this purpose, is ridiculous on every level.
Breaking down the facts
This is the most that has ever been spent by any government department on the super-powered iPhone hacking service. Towards the end of April earlier this year, it was revealed that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had made significant progress in a court case against the US government. That case was a battle over the right to warrantless searches of people’s phones at the border, but at this point, they are still able to – and so, they do. Controlling immigration processes in this way is unethical, to say the least, but alas it has not stopped government officials from continuing to do it over and over again. The fact remains, regardless of it all, that if the government is paying to hack into the phones of immigrants, what is stopping it from doing the same to US citizens?
What this means going forward
The blatant and unrelenting lack of ethical and even legal support has not stopped the Trump administration and the like from continuously stepping out of their line of jurisdiction, and the unfortunate truth is that, while Trump is still president, it is likely that this type of injustice will continue. Remember, this is the leader who incited an action that literally tore the children of asylum seekers from the arms of their loved ones at the border. The action to hack the phones of immigrants going into the USA might not be as brutal as that, but it is a fundamental lack of respect and a massive overstep in power. Constantly treating immigrants with suspicion and a complete lack of communication and respect is only making the United States’ current process of working with immigrants more disturbing all the time.
