The laws in the United States are infamous around the world for being decidedly different to the same law brackets of other countries. This is particularly true for the US law system in comparison to the law systems in other western countries. Everything from the channels to go through to bring attackers to justice, to which type of vehicle attorney to hire when approaching a drink-driving lawsuit against oneself, is inherently different in one way or another. And while this is true not just of the USA, but of most countries in the modern world, there is one branch of US law that is not only different to its core, but has ignored the statistics, the facts, and its own peoples’ insistence for change. That branch of law is none other than gun control. The fact is that as long as practically anyone can purchase a gun freely, as well as the ammunition that makes the gun deadly – and without a background check into the individual’s mental health etc – this will continue to be an epidemic of catastrophic proportions.
The longest battle in US history
Gun control in the USA is now the longest battle in US history, and it is ongoing even today. There is a definitive divide between the nation’s civilians, and the legal actions of the politicians who enforce the gun control laws in the country. Considering the fact that the USA is one of the most influential nations in the western world (if not the most influential of them all), it is shocking to realise the depths of the refusal of the US government to act and protect its people against gun violence. It is not only surprising but disgusting that any nation’s government would be so irresponsible, even as more and more of its people lay dead or dying every new day, all of them having been involved in gun violence.
The statistics speak for themselves
The number of mass shootings in the USA in 2018 totalled over three-hundred by year’s end. This is nearly one mass shooting a day for the entire calendar year. This statistic would be harrowing enough in the broadest of terms, but it is important to emphasise that the term “mass shooting” refers to an event with a firearm that resulted in the death of upwards of three people. This means that there are even more shootings in the nation every year, each of which resulted in the near-miss, injury, or fatality of one to three individuals. And this is just the USA. This is an epidemic that has turned the nation red, and the gun laws across the USA are still largely unchanged.
A nation pleading for immediate change
The entire nation has been standing up for stronger gun laws, as the loss of life has continuing to be an excruciating detail in their every day. Nobody wants to feel in danger, or for their children to go to school in a world where there is a possibility they will die before they get to go home from school that day. It is important to note that immediate change does not necessarily mean immediate remedy. Immediate change can and does refer to any movements or small changes that have an impact on the availability of firearms and the ammunition that makes them so deadly and powerful, as well as the individuals who want to have them in their possession at any point.
