Starting with Fall 2021, students are required to complete a First Year Seminar (FYS) within their first year at IU South Bend as part of the First Year Experience (FYE). The FYS designation is a “tag” added to a course that meets another general-education requirement, and enrollment in such courses is restricted to students with fewer than 30 credits.
Sometimes completing an FYS before reaching 30 credits is not feasible, and in such cases it is necessary to contact the FYE Program Director in order to request that a permission code be put in place to override the <30 credit enrollment restriction for all FYS courses. Please follow the link below to contact the FYE Director:

Exemptions for Transfer Students
Students transferring in with 45+ credits qualify for a substantially reduced set of general-education requirements, which do not include an FYS. Additionally, students who transfer in with 30+ credits are not required to complete an FYS, either, although often the student would still benefit from doing so, and consultation with the FYE Program Director is recommended in such cases. Note that all FYS courses also meet another general-education requirement, so this can be done without adding credits.
