Dr. Gail McGuire will deliver her Lundquist lecture “High Impact Teaching: How Students Learn, Grow, and Serve their Communities through Undergraduate Research,” on Thursday, April 1, 7:00-8:00 pm.
Dr. McGuire will discuss how undergraduate research enhances student learning, provides students with life-long skills, and connects students to the community. She will also reflect on how undergraduate research has enriched her teaching and how it supports the public mission of IU South Bend.
Dr. McGuire has conducted studies on neighborhood well-being, community vibrancy, affordable housing, and downtown revitalization.
“One of the reasons I do this kind of work is because it provides hands-on learning experiences for students,” she said. “By being confronted with the messiness of research, students develop the skills and resilience needed to navigate real life challenges through my community engaged research. I’m also able to help community partners understand and meet their challenges and opportunities and connect campus and community members for the common good.”
The Lundquist Award “is the campus’ highest faculty award,… made to a meritorious faculty member of Indiana University South Bend Campus, who has exhibited excellence in teaching, scholarly or artistic achievement, and diversified relevant service, preferably in community service throughout the Michiana region.” Faculty named for the award give an annual lecture.
