The South Bend Museum of Art is featuring The Light Bringer interactive exhibit until October 13th. The Light Bringer is a 6 foot tall sculpture that was created by Umcebo Design in South Africa and commissioned by IU South Bend’s Social Action Project. The goal of this life-size piece of art is to allow the general public to share their stories and to understand the roots of their shared experiences. Visitors are able to write their stories in provided notebooks; the stories are then condensed to a message or image and transferred to a paper feather. The feathers are incorporated into the structure to emphasize the importance and value of storytelling. Dr. Dé Bryant, Director of The Social Action Project, had this to say on the importance of storytelling: “Storytelling puts words on those feelings that drive us. Our combined stories, from different sides of the planet – and from opposite sides of our town – help us reach beyond rhetoric to create action strategies.”
