The launch of the Hack Indiana Series for 2016 — also known as #INCapitol Hack — is set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, February 26 at 200 W. Washington St. in Indianapolis.
For those who are not familiar with downtown Indy navigation, 200 W. Washington St. just so happens to be the Indiana Statehouse Rotunda. And for those who are not familiar with “hackathons,” theses are challenges that invite competing teams of developers, coders and designers to conjure up innovative applications that benefit the public at-large.
Last year, in a competition involving hacking teams from Indiana and Texas, such solutions included:
- A paperless way for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to more efficiently process nearly two dozen varieties of documents in a centralized manner;
- A mobile app for www.my35.org, the Texas Department of Transportation’s planning tool that provides information on road conditions, current and future lane closures and traffic delays along Interstate 35.
- A Texas Department of Family and Protective Services app that provides a map-based view and service offerings of local child-care operations.
Indiana won bragging rights over Texas in last year’s competition, which was won by the father-son team of John and Isaiah Schevola. They developed a platform for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security that guides Hoosiers affected by natural disasters and emergencies to the proper state agencies or non-profit organizations.
As with last year’s event, this year’s hackathon is being organized by the Indy Chamber and TechPoint in partnership with the State of Indiana. A schedule for this year’s kickoff event is available here, with registration information available here.
