Janet S. Carpenter, associate dean for research at the Indiana University School of Nursing, has released a four-minute video on YouTube about the original music composed for her “Hot Flashes? Cool!” informational art exhibit.
Michael Drews, an associate professor of music in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI, electronically composed music based on information Carpenter provided. In the video, they discuss music selections and its characteristics, including serious and playful tones.
“I read a book about the physics of music. The waveforms that were shown looked a lot like the hot flashes recording I had,” Carpenter said. “Michael and I started talking about if it would be possible to use the waveforms to create music.”
“Hot Flashes? Cool!” is an educational art exhibit Carpenter created to refute myths, provide accurate and culturally appropriate information, prevent use of unproven treatments, and spur dialogue about menopausal hot flashes. The exhibit comprises multiple two- and three-dimensional art, music, and film pieces.
The exhibit’s concept graphics traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia; San Diego; and Indianapolis in 2018. They are scheduled to travel during 2019 to The Art Gallery at IU Northwest in Gary and to South Dakota State University in Sioux Falls.
Carpenter has worked with the IU Innovation and Commercialization Office to copyright descriptions of exhibit pieces and to trademark the exhibit art and logo.
