Tuesday saw the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay wind its way through Monroe County, the city of Bloomington and onto the Indiana University campus itself. And among those bearing the enduring flame of the Hoosier State was Innovate Indiana’s own Kirk White, who serves as IU’s military liaison and assistant vice president of strategic partnerships.
White was one of 2,200 Hoosiers selected from more than 4,000 nominees for the relay, which began in Corydon on Sept. 9 and ends Oct. 15 at the Indiana Statehouse. The relay was created to honor Hoosiers “who have demonstrated exceptional public service, achievement, acts of heroism and/or volunteer service to their neighborhood, community, region or state,” according to a state website.
Among numerous other IU representatives selected as torchbearers were Debbie Lemon, secretary of IU’s Board of Trustees; Susan Sciame-Giesecke, chancellor for IU Kokomo; and Lynn Coyne, an adjunct professor with IU’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Coyne recently retired as IU’s assistant vice president for real estate and associate counsel and currently serves as president of the Bloomington Economic Development Corp.
