Newly released rankings reflect Indiana University’s continuing leadership in educating student entrepreneurs and supporting them as they develop, launch and nurture new business ideas and startups.
IU ranks 46th in the 2022 PitchBook university rankings for undergraduate programs, which compare public and private colleges and universities around the world by counting the number of alumni entrepreneurs who have founded venture capital-backed companies. When only analyzing undergraduate programs at public universities, IU ranks 27th overall and 22nd in the region of North America.
PitchBook is a leading resource for comprehensive data, research and insights spanning the global capital markets. Its undergraduate and graduate rankings are based on an analysis of more than 144,000 VC-backed founders.
IU’s 46th place ranking in the undergraduate rankings was based on its 291 founders who received a first round of venture capital funding between Jan. 1, 2012, and Oct. 21, 2022. During this time, the IU founders received $5 billion in funding. Pitchbook also did a separate ranking for worldwide graduate programs, in which IU tied for 69th place.
“Rankings provide only one measure of success, of course, but the Pitchbook analysis suggests that IU’s investments in student entrepreneurship and innovation are having a substantial positive impact,” said Tony Armstrong, president and CEO of IU Ventures, IU’s early-stage venture and angel investment arm. “These rankings spotlight IU’s globally competitive track record in producing startup company founders, who we know will continue to drive the creation of high-quality jobs for Hoosiers and the overall successful development of Indiana’s innovation economy.”
