Teri Willey, executive director of IU Ventures, will be the featured speaker for the upcoming virtual BioPathways event, “Mining Midwest Biotech Treasures Part VI: A University Venture Perspective.”
BioPathways is a monthly event series, presented by Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and SmartHealth Activator featuring prominent bioentrepreneurs, biotech executives and biotech venture capitalists in a fireside chat.
The event will take place Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 5 to 6 p.m. Registration is required.
Willey will speak about university venture capital.
“The overall theme of the speakers series is venture capital in the Midwest. I will be speaking about my perspective regarding university venture capital; previous speakers covered traditional and corporate venture capital,” Willey said. “I’m hoping that what I have to say will be of interest to company founders and investment syndicate partners.”
IU Ventures successes
IU Ventures has been recognized as an active investor. It is one of the top-five most-active venture capital firms based on the number of deals in Indiana made in the first half of 2020. The other four most-active investors are Elevate Ventures, High Alpha, Techstars Sports Accelerator and Pit Road.
It also has proven successful in working with other investors through syndication, or co-investing to complete one or more rounds of financing. Recent studies have shown that IU Philanthropic Venture Fund portfolio companies:
- have raised an additional $83 million in funding along with the fund’s initial investment because of syndication;
- have raised $44 million in subsequent rounds of funding following IU Ventures’ initial investment;
- raise an additional $17 for each dollar of investment from the Philanthropic Venture Fund.
