By David Gard, assistant vice president for economic engagement, Indiana University
I am pleased to report that the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, or APLU, has released a new policy position paper on advancing university-engaged economic and societal prosperity. The paper focuses on key imperatives for universities and the federal government to address as related to five high-priority national economic and community-development initiatives:
- Build a thriving rural America.
- Meet the demands for 21st-century talent through workforce development.
- Secure American leadership in advanced manufacturing.
- Stimulate and accelerate university-based innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Foster equitable, inclusive economic opportunity and mobility.
As secretary of APLU’s Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Economic Prosperity, a co-sponsor of the report, I greatly value the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from other institutions around the country. We recognize the important role universities play in fostering economic growth for the regions and the citizens they collectively serve.
The paper, titled “Advancing University-Engaged Economic and Social Prosperity,” is available online.
